• NFTDay Live Chat with Metagood Investor Gabby Dizon + OCM Community Goes Bananas on the First NFT Auction!

NFTDay Live Chat with Metagood Investor Gabby Dizon + OCM Community Goes Bananas on the First NFT Auction!

On NFT Day 2022 (September 20th), we celebrated with a great conversation with Gabby Dizon, co-founder of Yield Guide Games (YGG), and held our first auction for NFTs using OCM Bananas (and it definitely won’t be our last). It was a no-brainer to sit down with Dizon to hear about his take on the rise of the NFT industry and what it means for community building as a whole – a valuable discussion for us here at OCM, with the community at the forefront of our organization. If you missed us live, but want to listen in on the talk with Gabby Dizon and get in on the buzz around the auctioned NFTs, you can listen to the recording here.

    Gabby Dizon on the !RISE

With over 20 years in the gaming industry, Dizon is an early adopter of the NFT, having been sparked by the creation of Ethereum and Smart Contracts in 2017. The idea that money could be programmable – that it could be turned into software with code – was of specific interest to Dizon at the time, who was already building virtual economies within the gaming industry. The non-fungible token was introduced alongside this digital currency boom, and the rest was history.

Hyper-growth for YGG took off with the rise of the game Axie Infinity. In 2020, the concept of lending within the digital currency/NFT world was introduced in the game – with players who owned a surplus of NFTs agreeing to a revenue share with those who wanted them via Smart Contracts. In a play-to-earn environment, this was a massive scaling within the community and what inspired YGG. YGG has purchased assets in over 40 games, and Web3 and NFT economies are reaching tons of people worldwide – it’s the ultimate community builder.

Like us here at OCM, Dizon is big on community, which is easy to see, with the anticipation of YGG’s new Web 3 Festival, which will be held this November in the Philippines, a country that has had one of the most rapid adoptions of Web3 and digital currency in the last few years. The festival will show how Web3 can impact people in the real world – focusing on NFTs and games but also expanding across the entire ecosystem of the growing Web3 landscape.

The theme of the community also drew Dizon to be a part of On Chain Monkey in the first place. It’s the good people and the banana economy that stand out to him, and he shared that using an NFT community to spread good around the world is something he’d really like to see more of. We’re right there with you, Gabby – and our community knows – we’re already well on our way.

    Let the Bidding Begin

Speaking of the banana economy – onto the auction! There were six items up for grabs: 1 OCM Earth, 1 OCM Ledgers, 2 OCM NFT Canvases (a high-quality 18×18 print of a monkey of the bidder’s choice), 1 OCM Karma and the most coveted of them all, 1 OCM Genesis. Available only during our live Twitter Spaces with Dizon, community members placed bids in real-time in our OCM Discord – one of the most engaging hubs for our community to connect, geek out on NFTs, and monkey around.

With 432 members attending live on Twitter Spaces and even more ready to bid on Discord alone, The OCM team kicked off the auction, announcing each item with a starting banana bid. The lead bidder was announced in real-time as it changed, and it – was – exhilarating! Banana bids moved fast, and with just a two-minute timer on each item up for grabs, we’ve never seen our community so engaged. By the end of the auction, OCM collected 6342 bananas, the majority of which went towards the Genesis and Karma NFTs as expected! Here’s the breakdown of how everything sold:

    OCM Earth – 142 bananas

    OCM Ledger  – 550 bananas

    OCM Canvas 1 – 700 bananas

    OCM Canvas 2 – 600 bananas

    OCM Karma – 1600 bananas

    OCM Genesis – 2750 bananas

We can’t thank our community enough for the extra high vibes and for participating in this amazing event, and we can’t wait for the next one! We think one thing is clear – we are ALL re-motivated to start earning more bananas!

  • The Landscape of Marketing in the Web3 Age: Metagood at Brandweek 2022

The Landscape of Marketing in the Web3 Age: Metagood at Brandweek 2022

The 5th annual Brandweek Summit, presented by Adweek came back to Miami this September, and with a well-timed special offering, Brandweek Presents: Web3 & The Metaverse. Metagood Evangelist Mike Chavez dropped in to hear what brand and marketing industry leaders had to say on the power, promise and potential of the new internet. The consensus? The metaverse economy is a massive opportunity for brands and everyone is moving in!

The Landscape of Marketing in the Age of Web3

The Brandweek Summit is always a unique experience, offering insight and ideas on the realities and possibilities of how businesses interact and create offerings for their audiences. But when it comes to the rise of Web3, marketing teams and consumer experience execs have been handed an entirely new toolset to engage and connect with their consumers.

The series of panels, focused talks, 1:1 meetings and networking events with industry-leading brands set the stage to spark creativity to build new experiences for customers, establish confidence in the space and offer a glimpse into what might be possible for brands in the future. The way consumers connect to brands and businesses is rapidly changing and while a few years ago, the concept of Web3 may have been optional for brands, we’re now at a more urgent stage of adoption – get on the ship now or let it leave without you!

Metagood sat in to take notes from Marc Matheiu of Salesforce, who explained the current state of Web3 and the challenges the ad industry is facing.

In Marc’s view, Web3 marketers operate in a “zero data” environment. This is due to the fact that data on most blockchains are public. Importantly, he named a big challenge of the Web3 movement: a loss of trust in institutions, and that includes brands. To help build back that relationship, he believes that there’s an opportunity to change incentive structures in the economy because this new paradigm makes customers a “co-owner, co-creator, co-innovator, and co-citizen”. Marc posed a simple but interesting question during his presentation: ‘What is marketing?’ He asked, “Is it about saying more stuff to people, or is it about helping people find who they are and who they can be? To me, it is not about self-service, but about self-sovereignty: finding new aspects of their identity in Web3.” Marc also outlined the concept of a DaMo (decentralized marketing operations team), which reflects the evolution of how marketing occurs in Web3:  the brand’s community can act as a distributed marketing agency.

This concept is familiar to us at Metagood & OnChainMonkey as we’ve built OCM alongside our bright and passionate community since OCM Genesis was launched in September 2021. Building in this fashion is in the DNA of our team and something we champion as we continue to build toward a more decentralised world in the Web3 space.

    Community in the NFT Space

Our team is also no stranger to the power of NFTs and we heard from interesting voices in the space, including Lin Dai of OneOf NFT and Avery Akkineni of Vayner3, who shared how Miami is artfully being built into the central hub of all things NFT. From listening to the many great speakers present at Brandweek’s Metaverse Day it was clear the next wave of NFTs is going to be a lot different because of the presence of more capital being deployed by big brands and the highly-skilled teams that will enter the space.

We understand that community sits at the core of the value proposition for any NFT product/service. NFTs as a technology enable trustless transactions using blockchains, but it is the communities that have formed around NFT products and services in the current profile picture (PFP) wave of adoption that are transforming the ways brands will interact with their customers. We believe that the key to success in this new business environment is to build genuine communities where ethos and mission are aligned and collective action is rewarded  through a flexible and scalable incentives framework. At Metagood, we have spent our first year building a talented and passionate community centered around our !RISE values (Respect Integrity Sustainability Experimentation), our “Off-Chain” Bananas (OnChainMonkey’s in-ecosystem utility token), OnChainMonkey DAO, and our latest feature which is called Missions, our incentive system that will enable us to organize and harness the power of a very large & globally distributed community.

When it comes to how communities interact with brands on a larger level, like swaying the direction of an NFT collection or social cause contribution, as we do with OnChainMonkey, Lin Dai offered insight we all need to be paying attention to as Web3 goes mainstream. If we want to democratize NFTs, he said, we have to “remove knowledge of the tech as a requirement to use and benefit from NFTs.” No brainer, but a big step for many brands, though most of us are familiar with the way this concept can thrive. For example, Dai offered, “understanding the OSI model of the internet is not a pre-requisite to use the internet.”

    Mainstream Metaverse

With the spread of COVID-19 and the worldwide lockdowns that ensued, the world economy moved swiftly to a remote-work model using virtual environments at a scale not seen before. This accelerated the adoption of applications like Zoom, Slack, Discord, and also the adoption of NFTs as membership tokens to online clubs or communities.

Andrew McKechnie of Verizon spoke of how the wireless career company created a virtual environment to participate in the Super Bowl during pandemic closures. As one of the most anticipated and physically attended sporting events of the year, it was a massive feat to create a worthwhile experience for the masses sitting in their living rooms, who had hearts set on sitting in the stadium. McKechnie quoted a few jaw-dropping statistics that remind us how far along the adoption curve the world already is: 40 million people visited their virtual stadium, 5 million people viewed the live stream for the event and the unique approach to the event bridged fans from two distinct and very large industries: professional sports and gaming. This is a great case-study. It reveals the importance of understanding that when communities are built using virtual environments they are bound to overlap and that value-creation potential for this overlap is massive.

Though brand building is certainly going to change a lot over the next several years, we believe that authenticity and integrity will be foundational to the most successful brands. We created Metagood and OnChainMonkey because we believe in the power of communities to bring positive social impact to fruition when they are focused and incentivized to do so. We believe communities are powerful, because people working together is powerful!

  • OCM Speaks at Neckerverse 2022, Collaborates on an Exclusive NFT Collection, and Kitesurfs with a Pro

OCM Speaks at Neckerverse 2022, Collaborates on an Exclusive NFT Collection, and Kitesurfs with a Pro

We had a magical week this August on Sir Richard Branson’s Island, Necker Island, for the inaugural NeckerVerse summit! NeckerVerse 2022 was the first NFT/DAO/Web3 infrastructure conference held on the island, presented by Bill Tai’s own 501c3 ACTAI Global, Extreme Tech Challenge, and the Bitfury Group. It was 5 days of sun, sand and serious innovation and inspiration. Read on for our favorite moments!

As an exclusive invite-only conference, NeckerVerse 2022 offered a slew of speakers and panels. Curated by OCM co-founders Bill Tai and Amanda Terry, there were plenty of opportunities to share the OCM story with NFT collectors and our existing Metagood investors. Among the stellar collection of talks, Amanda spoke on panels with Gabby Dizon, co-founder of Yield Guild, about our DAO & Social Impact which kicked off a discussion around some cross-community collab opportunities.

Amanda also moderated a panel with Jaime Leverton, CEO of Bitcoin mining company, Hut 8 Corp, about revolutionizing data centers for Web3. Hut 8 plans to work with some of our DAO projects!

Talking about crypto and conservation with Metagood investor and Ocean Elders founder Gigi Brisson

Plus, we partnered with Hut 8 to create a super special NFT for all Neckerverse attendees based on the set of Karma monkeys Hut 8 purchased to join the OCM DAO. We really wanted to share the monkey love and creating something unique for this event was awesome. You can view them up on OpenSea now!

  • Q3 Update: The !RISE of OCM

Q3 Update: The !RISE of OCM

    TLDR
    – Over 3,000 ETH raised in the OCM Karma Public Mint
    – Over 1,500 new wallets contributed to majority of the funds from the mint
    – Additional equity financing raised for Metagood, the company behind OCM, well positioned for long term growth
    – Utility for Genesis and Karma: Missions, Bananas, DAO
    – OCM Combinator talks and events
    – New OCM Community survey
    – Welcome Party (parties) for all members (Date TBA)
    – OCM Banana Poker Tournament (Date TBA)
    – 1 Year anniversary of OCM Genesis on September 11, 2022

    Q3 Update

We started Q3 with the Karma mint that raised over 3,000 ETH. Metagood, the company behind OCM, raised an additional equity round to position itself for long term growth. We’ve hired 3 new folks this month, and now have a team of 18 globally. Metagood was founded in May 2021 by Danny Yang, Amanda Terry, and Bill Tai.

Following the Karma launch, the focus is now on Missions, Bananas, and the DAO. Genesis and Karma are the core collections and we’re building out functionality for both. For new folks, here’s a quick background of the Genesis collection. First, behind the simple-looking art of Genesis is highly complex onchain art and tech. The whole 10,000 pfp (profile photo) collection, including the images, the metadata, and the rich distribution was created in a single transaction on the Ethereum blockchain. Genesis was the first of its kind: no one else had done this before.

    OCM Genesis

Genesis was launched on September 11, 2021, and since then a passionate OCM community has been growing around it, following the four core values of !RISE – Respect, Integrity, Sustainability, and Experimentation. Awarded 2022 Fast Company’s 20 Best World Changing Ideas for Impact Investing, the OCM community has made notable real-world impact, and created value for everyone.

    Banana Economy

Bananas were created as the community currency to reward people for good actions. Genesis holders can earn bananas by being active in our Discord or tweeting with @OnChainMonkey, which can be redeemed for OCM merchandise, signed books, mint passes, and poker antes. Bananas are integrated with Discord, Twitter, Ethereum, and the OCM website, which is no small feat.

    OCM DAO

We’re kicking off Season 1 of the OCM DAO with the theme of Brand and Community Building for OCM. Fifty percent of the Karma mint revenues and royalties are dedicated to the OCM DAO and it currently has ~1,800 ETH. The budget for Season 1 is 100 ETH, and we’ll describe a simple process where many small projects can be funded in an efficient manner. These projects will help align the community to build together and raise awareness for OCM. Genesis and Karma holders all have a vote in the DAO. For holders of both Genesis and Karma, they get a bonus vote, and this is just one example of the extra utility that we will be giving to our most loyal community members.

    Monkeyverse Missions

Missions are a way for us to deliver further utility to our members, create value together, and have a bit of fun in the process. Missions were unlocked for Genesis just before the Karma launch, and many Genesis are already nearing completion on their first Lab Mission. The vision for Missions is a big one. Missions are a platform to incentivize value creation for the community through the use of fungible (bananas) and non-fungible tokens. We are building out this platform for the OCM community, and it could be used in the future by other communities looking to create similar incentive systems in Web3. The initial Lab Mission is a simple one, similar to “nesting” in Moonbirds aka hodling your NFT. The Lab Mission rewards long term holders of OCM. After you finish the Lab 1 Mission, you can start the Lab 2 Mission and keep leveling up your OCM. Higher level OCMs will receive more benefits!

The Lab 1 Mission for Genesis takes 30 days, which means you hold your Genesis NFT for 30 days. For Karma, the Lab 1 Mission is coming soon, and will take longer.

Leveling up your OCM unlocks more types of Mission. Missions can encompass many things, including completing projects that create value for participants and the community. Missions will integrate with the DAO. Some Missions will only be available for Monkeys who have specific traits or meta-traits. Note that whether a Genesis has eaten both Desserts (D1 and D2) is also an onchain property of the Genesis and is a meta-trait. Having eaten Desserts is marked with a green check on the OCM website and is considered an onchain upgrade to your Genesis. Some special Missions may also require having the matching sets of Genesis/Karma1/Karma2.

Example view of a Genesis that has eaten both D1 and D2

    OCM Community & Talks

Part of the value of OCM is the awesome community. We count many founders of web2 and web3 companies as members of the team and community, including the founders/creators/leaders of DuskBreakers, Angry Ape Army, ZenAcademy, CATC, Shonen Junk, Moonbirds, Memeland, Litecoin, Dapper Labs, OneOf, The Sandbox, Axie Infinity, YGG, the Ethereum Foundation, Etherscan, Algorand, Chainlink, Second Life, Virgin Unite, Kabam, Twitch, Crunchyroll, Rotten Tomatoes, Blockchain, Sardine, Nike, Ledger, Animoca, and more. We will be running an OCM Combinator series of talks for our community. Some of the upcoming talks we’ll schedule for our members are:
    – Smart contract programming, how to create an onchain NFT
    – How to launch an NFT
    – NFT Licensing and IP
    – How the art for the Karma collection was created (led by our award winning artists)
    – Web3 Security Best Practices
    – Selecting an L1 Blockchain
    – Angel Investing Tips (led by Bill Tai)

    Karma Launch

On June 29th, we launched OCM Karma, a membership NFT collection to expand the OCM community and fund the DAO and team. The Karma mint raised over 3,000 ETH with half going to the OCM DAO. Of the 2,500 wallet accounts that minted Karma, 1,500 were new wallets to the OCM ecosystem, and most of the funds raised were from the new wallets. A total of 7,045 Karma were minted. This leaves 2,955 Karma as unminted and are assets that can be used in the future to benefit the community.

    OCM Karma (Karma1, Karma2, unrevealed Karma3)

The Karma collection had a number of cool features beyond the amazing art. First, all the metadata and traits are completely onchain. Extraordinarily, the distribution of the traits was also created onchain by the smart contract itself. Doing things onchain has long term value which we’ll describe in future OCM Combinator talks. Creating the complex art combined with this onchain generation made the work for the artists more difficult. When they designed the artwork, they had to plan for billions of combinations of Karma. They could not hand pick certain combinations, and remove certain combinations of traits. They had to design traits for all combinations. On top of that, they had to design traits that respected the original Genesis collection which included a bunch of constraints, complex meta-traits, and various matches. They had to do this for two full collections: Karma1 and Karma2. Each Karma1 image required assembling 24 layers of images. Each Karma2 image required assembling 25 layers of images. A layer could be the background, or a body part, or a lighting component. This is why it took 9 months to create the full Karma1 and Karma2 collections.

We had also launched another fully onchain NFT collection in February 2022 called OCM Desserts, which Genesis holders can “eat” (i.e. burn their token) to create a Karma monkey based on the traits of their Genesis.

    OCM Dessert (D1, D2, D3)

The Karma collection launch thus included a Dessert eating mechanic, Dessert Early Claim Tickets, VIP allowlist NFTs, and IPFS submarining. We used IPFS in a way that does not reveal the images until Desserts are eaten, even though all Karma1 and Karma2 images have already been loaded into IPFS. It was a complex art and engineering feat, and launching the collection was an intricate dance among several teams that rehearsed for several days in advance. For the actual Karma launch, all the complicated pieces came together perfectly.

The only significant problem happened when the OCM minting website was hit with a DDoS attack during our allow list mint window before our public mint. This made the website extremely slow to use or unusable. The great thing about decentralization is that minting still worked via the Ethereum smart contract directly. We shared instructions on how to mint directly from the contract and some people minted directly using Etherscan! Meanwhile, the Engineering team valiantly fought off the DDoS attack and had the website back up half a day later. No NFTs, wallets, or data were compromised in the DDoS attack.

Over 1,300 people tuned in to witness the Karma reveal live at our Karma Reveal & Desserts Party on Twitter Spaces. And staying true to doing things fairly and securely onchain, the reveal of Karma used Chainlink VRF to ensure that the whole process was provably fair.

What to look out for in the future

The first Genesis will be finishing the first Mission and leveling up. They will automatically start the second Lab Mission. Karma will be able to start their first Mission pretty soon.

We’ll be sending out an OCM Community survey next week. We did a similar survey in October 2021, and we are excited to learn how our community has developed over the last year.

Welcome party (parties) for all members. We’ll host a few welcome parties to get to know old and new members of the community.

We’ll organize a big Banana Poker party later this quarter. Save up some Bananas so you can join the fun. Last quarter we had a lively game with Charlie Lee, Owen Wilson, and Woody Harrelson, among others.

We’ll celebrate our 1 Year anniversary of OCM Genesis on September 11, 2022!

OCM has a big vision and we’ll be building for the long term. We are just starting this journey in Web3 together and have laid a solid foundation. Our core team has diverse experience in crypto, finance, art, law, and technology. Our community has an abundance of successful builders in web2 and web3, and we will be creating value together through the DAO and Missions.

The fact that OCM NFTs are onchain is important, and we’ll see the value of onchain assets more and more in the future. Crypto, defi, dapps, are all onchain. Many NFTs of 2021-2022 are the exception with so many being pointers to offchain servers. OCM is ahead of the curve. The future is bright for onchain and OCM.

Some final alpha: If you thought Karma2 was cool, wait till you see Karma3 (these are the unique 1 of 1s in the Karma collection that have not been revealed), and the new things coming for Genesis and Karma holders who have leveled up!

And final words from Bill: “It’s pretty impressive what’s been done in a year and what’s in the pipeline. A couple good decisions in strategic direction with some good community engagement, plus some ‘wind at our back’ in a market upturn… and we could come out of the current market chaos as ‘a thing’ and break out as an economic engine. The current downdraft will kill off a lot of projects, and when the smoke clears, the few remaining that have defined good ‘engagement mechanisms’ will ‘catch the updraft’ with more share of the overall activity so the growth rates of the winners will surprise everyone in the same way as in previous upcycles.”

NFT.NYC: OCM Hosts Holder’s Brunch and Panels + Karma Makes it to Times Square!

Plain and simple: OCM LOVES NYC! It’s always incredible energy getting our community together and our crew at NFT.NYC this year was no different. From our brunch and panel sessions with 250+ of you to lighting up Times Square with our big Karma news, this event was one for the books. We even hosted an EXTRA happy hour later in the week for those who weren’t in town Tuesday – our community loves to monkey around! Read the recap of our time at NFT.NYC below and be sure to check out our highlight reel here

Amanda kicked us off on Monday (June 20th) at We Are Web3 for the “Building Brands and Communities with Vision” all-female panel, sponsored by MetaAngels’ co-founders Allyson Downey and Alex Cavoulacos with Ledger and Adobe. She spoke with co-founders Sydney Brafman of Goblintown, Mai Akiyoshi of Curious Addys, Shondra Washington of TBC Capital, and Carly Reilly of Overpriced JPEGs podcast.

Later in the week, Amanda also spoke on an official NFT.NYC panel on “NFTs for Investment in Sustainability” with Sander Gansen, founder of World of Freight, and Jeff Kelley of Edge of NFT podcast.

Our big day was Tuesday, hosting our Holders-only brunch with up to 2 guests at the Highbar Rooftop with 250+ attendees. Guests got their hands on some fun new swag including a limited edition “NFT NYC” hat and Karma reveal t-shirt. Amanda sat down for a talk on NFTs for Investment and Impact where she explained Metagood’s mission and gave updates on Karma, which minted on 6/29. She was joined by Inna Modja of Code Green and WOW, Apolo Ohno of Tribe Capital and Metagood investor, Ettore Rossetti of Save the Children and moderated by Randi Zuckerberg of HUG.xyz and Metagood investor.

Apolo spoke about how pro athletes used to flex with their fancy watch collections but now wear Apple watches to show their PFP.  PFP collections have become a consideration when people think about how and what they are social signalling. We learned that Save the Children was one of the first charitable organizations that accepted Bitcoin in 2013.The CEO of the Chopra Foundation, Poonacha Machaiah spoke about using the Metaverse to improve the mental health of youth.  OnChainMonkey had held a private meditation session in Discord for their holders with Deepak Chopra earlier in the year.

Amanda also rocked an interview with Judy Shaw on the New York Stock Exchange Floor Talk that had over 3M viewers.  Bananas!! You can watch the interview here.

Metagood is currently exploring a partnership with the NYSE to create a program to reward companies meeting their ESG and board diversity goals with NFTs. Our team got a tour of the NYSE from the Director of Capital Markets Brian Baumann and learned that the NYSE floor was the first air-conditioned room in the world!  The NYSE also has the largest Fabergé egg in the world and a unique collection of Andy Warhols and some NFTs on display!

The week was buzzing with talk of our Karma Mint (now available on Opensea: https://opensea.io/collection/karma-monkey!) and OCM was even featured on a GIANT Times Square billboard, courtesy of the NYSE, to promote Karma!  This 15 second video was shown every for 3 days during NFT.NYC.
